Process for Securing Disability Accommodations

A disability, under the American's with Disabilities Act (as amended), is defined as any physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity of an individual. This includes people who have a record of such impairment or individuals how are regarded as having a disability. Both permanent and temporary conditions can qualify for accommodations. 

Disclosure of a disability and utilization of accommodations is voluntary.  Accommodation Plans are tailored to each student’s unique functional limitations and barriers. If you are unsure if you have a medical condition that qualifies for disability accommodations, please contact Student Access Services (SAS) to discuss it.  

To establish an Accommodation Plan, please, follow the Interactive Process outlined below. If you are having any trouble during the process, do not hesitate to contact SAS office. 

1. Complete our online Student Access Application

You will need your WVC student email to login. Please, note that all correspondence will be emailed to your WVC student email (not your personal email account). 
New WVC students without an assigned WVC email and password, please complete Non-SSO Application instead.  

2. Submit Supporting Medical Documentation

WVC Student Access Services typically requires students who are seeking accommodations on the basis of disability to provide documentation from a qualified healthcare professional. Wenatchee Valley College acknowledges that individual circumstances may vary, and documentation may differ based on access to healthcare, the nature of the disability and healthcare professionals. Supporting medical documentation can come in a variety of forms, including but not limited to a letter from a doctor or a counselor, chart notes or an IEP evaluation.

This documentation serves three purposes:

    • To establish that the student can be considered a person with a disability, and therefore is eligible for protection against discrimination on the basis of disability.
    • To supplement information from the student’s narrative regarding the impact of their disability.
    • To inform the development of an individualized accommodation plan designed to facilitate equal access to Wenatchee Valley College’s services and environments.

Helpful information to include in the supporting medical documentation:

    • credentials, contact information and signature of the qualified medical provider
    • treatment history with the provider, such as frequency of visits, last appointment, and length of treatment
    • name of the medical condition and diagnostic methodology used to establish it
    • thorough description of current symptoms and the impacts of the disability
    • Describe expected progression, episodic nature or stability of the medical condition

Any additional information from the medical practitioner that will help us best serve the student's accommodation needs will be considered. However, Wenatchee Valley College is the final determinant of appropriate accommodations in our environment.

3. Complete an Intake Interview.

Every effort is made to expedite the process, but it can take up to 15 business days to review your accommodation request and medical documentation. Once your request has been reviewed, you will be invited to schedule an Intake appointment to further discuss the impacts of your condition and appropriate accommodations. 

4. Send Accommodation Notifications to Your Instructors. 

At the beginning of every quarter, please, log in to  Student Access Services Portal to inform instructors of your accommodations. You can find more information about this on the Student Access Services Portal webpage.  

It is crucial that you follow up with your instructor after sending the  Accommodation Notification to discuss how your accommodations will be implemented in their particular course. This can be done in-person after class, through email, Canvas mail, or during your instructor’s office hours.
