Almost Done with your HS+ Diploma?

WVC has one graduation ceremony in the spring each year for all students who have earned a degree, certificate, or diploma.

Because we have just one ceremony a year, any students who will complete their studies within one to two quarters of the ceremony are also invited to participate.

If you have completed or will complete the requirements for your HS+ Diploma within two quarters of the graduation ceremony, we would love to have you participate in the ceremony this spring.

Please see WVC's Graduation webpage for more information about the Graduation Ceremony.

Contact the Transitional Studies Office if you would like to request to borrow a cap and gown for the ceremony:        transition@wvc.edu        509-682-6790

Are you almost done with the requirements for your HS+ Diploma?

Congratulations!!

Here are some Next Steps:

  1. Ask your ABE 77 HS+ Speed instructor to confirm for you that you are finishing up the final requirements for your HS+ Diploma
  2. If you expect to complete your diploma requirements this quarter, then it is time to fill out the Graduation Application
    • This application lets WVC know that you believe you will complete your program of study this quarter.
    • On the application, you will be asked whether or not you plan to attend the Spring Graduation Ceremony.
    • NOTEAll graduates must apply for graduation regardless of whether you choose to participate in a WVC graduation ceremony.
  3. On WVC's Prepare for Graduation page, read and follow steps 2, 3, 4, and 5.
    • Pay special attention to step 3. Apply for Graduation, and step 4. Receiving Your Diploma

If you are planning to continue into a college or career training program at WVC, or if you are considering it but want to know more, please continue reading the next section: Transition to College or Career Training

Transition to College or Career Training

Here are some next steps you can take to help you be successful as you transition into another education or training program here at WVC.

ABE classes have just a small charge per quarter, but classes from other departments on campus will charge regular college tuition and fees and often require you to purchase textbooks and materials to be able to complete the class.

No need to worry!  There are lots of programs that help support students financially while they are getting the education and training they need to enter the career of their choice.

As you get ready to transition into another program, it is important to plan ahead so that you are choosing to prepare for a "good-fit" career for you.

It is also important to get started right away on the steps listed in the next section so that the financial support is ready for you when you need it.

Check out the next sections for more information
about what to do next.

Here are some important steps to complete in order to transition into a college-level education or career training program at WVC.

  • Apply for the aid year you think you may begin taking classes from other departments at WVC
    • Remember that there are two types of financial aid that you may be offered:
      • Gift Aid (grants and scholarships) which you do not need to pay back
      • Loans (government or private loans) which you will need to pay back
  • Financial Aid applications usually take at least two months to process, so don't wait!  Apply early to allow for processing time and to reserve the most financial support for your education (they do run out of money)
  • If you need help filling out the application, contact the Student Grants Center for assistance (see below)

2.  Explore some of your "good-fit" career options
  • Complete some career assessments and learn more about the careers that interest you the most
  • Use some of the career exploration resources offered by WVC on the Career Resources and Tools page, like Career Cruising and WOIS
  • If you need more guidance deciding which program at WVC will fit you best, please contact your faculty adviser or the WVC Counseling Department for more information and help with career planning

3.  Explore the college and career training programs here at WVC

  • After you have an idea about what careers you are most interested in, you can consider how the educational and career training programs here at WVC can help you get there
  • You can explore different programs available at WVC on the Academics / Areas of Study webpage
  • When you think you know what program you want to take at WVC, you are ready to complete the next step: the WVC Transition Form

4.  Complete the WVC Transition Form
  • This form lets the Educational Planning Department know that you are near the end of your Transitional Studies HS+ or ESL program and that you want to start a new program soon
  • After this form is submitted, a Student Navigator will reach out to you to help you plan your program and classes

  • This form helps our Grants Center Navigators understand your career and educational plans and lets them know that you want to meet with them to see if you may qualify for additional grant support while you are in school

6.  Ask your HS+ Advisor (your ABE 77 instructor) if starting college-level classes before you finish your diploma is a good option for you
  • There is special "Ability to Benefit" bridge funding to pay for HS+ students to start college-level classes before they have completed their diplomas
  • This is a best fit for students who have completed the ABE 24 English Level E and the ABE 42 Advanced Math classes already, and who know what educational or training program they want to do next
  • If you are interested in doing this, let's set up a time to talk more about it and see if it would be a good option for you.
  • Contact the Transitional Studies Office: 509-682-6790 or transition@wvc.edu

We are excited that you'd like to continue your education and training after completing your Transitional Studies HS+ or ESL Program.

WVC has a lot of great programs to prepare students for in-demand career areas.  You can explore WVC's programs from the Academics / Areas of Study webpage.

But what if you aren't quite sure what you want career you want to prepare for?

On the Career Resources and Tools page you can find links to two career exploration resources to help you learn more about some good-fit career options for you:  Career Cruising and WOIS

These websites have various career and interest assessments as well as lots information to learn more about different careers, for example salary, working conditions, length of training required, number of openings per year, etc.

After you complete one or more of the assessments, you can spend some time learning about the careers that interest you the most.

Once you have a few ideas about possible future careers, you can schedule a meeting with our WVC counselors to discuss this further and make a plan.

Our WVC Counselors offer career, academic, and personal counseling, and are really great sources of information for students.

Here is a link to the WVC Counseling website where you can learn more and schedule an appointment.
