Alternative Route 1

The BAS-Teaching is for students planning to become certified Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Special Education teachers in grades preschool through third grade in the state of Washington.

The BAS-Teaching degree is a 2+2 program: two-year associate degree + two-year bachelor of applied science degree. Prior to beginning the bachelor of applied science program, the student must have an associate degree, or equivalent, in Early Childhood Education or a related field. Students with experience working in early childhood settings may also submit a portfolio of work in place of some required coursework.

Routes Offered

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Teaching (BAS-T) program offers initial certification through Alternative Route 1. The Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board provides the following explanation for Alternative Route 1:

“Route 1: For district staff (e.g., paraeducators) with an associate’s degree.
Route 1 is designed for district staff with an associate’s degree (or equivalent in credit hours).
Candidates enroll in a program for approximately two years to complete both their bachelor’s degree and certification requirements, including a one-year residency in the school district where they work.”
