AHEC Information

What is AHEC?

The AHEC (Area Health Education Center) is a national program developed by Congress in 1971 to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committee to underserved populations. The purpose of the AHEC Program is to develop and enhance education and training networks within communities, academic institutions, and community-based organizations.

AHECs are located in every state, and programs also extend beyond centers.

What is CW-AHEC?

Central Washington AHEC started in September of 2022, and includes six counties: Chelan, Douglas Grant, Kittitas, Okanogan and Yakima.  The CW-AHEC is housed at Wenatchee Valley College (WVC) which provides a unique opportunity for collaboration with neighboring communities and focused staffing.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Increase diversity among health professionals
  • Broaden the distribution of the health workforce
  • Enhance health care quality
  • Improve health care delivery to rural and underserved areas and populations
