The Wenatchee Valley College at Omak Foundation awarded five Nelson Accounting Scholarships to current WVC at Omak students pursuing degrees in accounting. The total award of $5,000 has been distributed among the five students.

Tera Evans, of Winthrop, is working on degrees in accounting and business, with plans to work in accounting.

Jarae Cate, of Nespelem, is a volunteer income tax preparer, and she participates on the annual Oral Board for Lake Roosevelt High School. She plans to continue her work with the Colville Confederated Tribes’ child support enforcement program to assist native families and to manage her husband’s company financials.

Tatyana Ann Martinez, of Omak, volunteers at the after-school program at North Elementary School, where she works with students from kindergarten through second grade. She intends to earn a business-transfer degree and transfer to Eastern Washington University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Hugo Sanchez, of Tonasket, intends to complete an accounting degree and transfer to Eastern Washington University. Sanchez played high school soccer and has volunteered at food banks.

Jennifer Farmer, of Okanogan, is a two-time recipient of the scholarship. Farmer is a volunteer hunter education instructor and a member of Amateur Radio Emergency Service/Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (ARES/RACES). She is working on degrees in business, accounting and the associate of arts and sciences transfer degree in hopes of one day opening her own business.

The Nelson Accounting Scholarship was established in 2009 by former Omak High School graduates Richard “Dick” Nelson and Susan Featherstone Nelson, who believed in giving back to the community that helped them. Following Richard’s recent passing, Susan continues the generosity of the Nelson family with this annual scholarship. She is a former certified public accountant and certified financial planner, now retired.
