Dr. Matthew Altman will present “Ethics in Focus: Capital Punishment” on Thursday, March 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in The Grove Recital Hall, Music and Art Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Recently, a number of state officials have said that they will introduce legislation to end the death penalty in Washington. Altman will explain the main arguments in favor of capital punishment (deterrence and retribution) and will evaluate the primary objections to both its morality and its constitutionality.
Altman is chair and associate professor in the Central Washington University Philosophy and Religious Studies Department. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago in 2001. He specializes in ethics and applied ethics, as well as Kant and nineteenth-century German philosophy. He is the author, coauthor or editor of five books, and he has published numerous articles, including most recently an article on the constitutionality of the death penalty in the Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law.
The lecture is sponsored by the WVC Philosophy Department.
