Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) are federal funds specifically designated for higher education to assist students affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The CARES, CRRSA and ARP acts all fall under this fund, but were passed by Congress at different times.
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress in March 2020.
The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act was passed by Congress in December 2020 to extend the initial support provided by CARES.
The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act was passed by Congress in March 2021. It extends the CARES and CRRSA funding into the 2021-2022 school year.
All of these funds are commonly referred to as CARES, which was the original HEERF funding. If you are experiencing a financial crisis the best course of action is to fill out the Emergency Grant Application to see if you are eligible for any of these funds.
